How Voting Works | History | 2019 Predictions | Introduction |
The Oscars are determined by the company that runs the show: The Academy (short for The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences but that doesn’t matter). The Academy is made up of thousands of members, who are filmmakers. Those people vote for who or what will win which category for the Oscars. For most categories, it’s a majority vote as people might think. For Best Picture, however, it’s much more complicated than that. The Academy members still vote for which movie they want, but there’s more to it than that. After the first poll for Best Picture, whichever movie gets the least amount of votes will be removed from the list of nominees and the Academy members vote again. They repeat this process until there’s one nominee that has more than 50% of the votes. Majority of the Academy members vote for whichever movie they want. However, they normally can’t let those movies win. With this process for the Best Picture category, most of the members would have to vote for their next favorite movie on the list and then their next favorite until the poll meets the requirements.
